NRB, one of the leaders of Belgium’s ICT sector, and Etix Everywhere, a global data center provider and operator, announce today their partnership to develop a new colocation data center in Liège, Wallonia, Belgium. The data center will provide 900 square meters of IT space with 900 kVA of power at full build-out.
Supporting the Digital Transformation of Business, Thanks to Cutting Edge Infrastructure

The project consists of three modules of 300 square meters and 300 kVA each. Construction work began in March 2017 and the first module will be ready to receive the first 100 racks in October 2017. Thanks to the technical design developed by Etix Everywhere, each additional module will be delivered in 16 weeks, so that the data center can be adjusted to market needs. The investment for the first phase of the data center, which includes building the next two modules, represents a total of €4.2 million co-financed by NRB and Etix Everywhere.

“This new data center demonstrates the attractiveness of Wallonia for foreign investors,” says Jean-Claude Marcourt, Minister for Economic Affairs and the Digital Economy. “This long-term partnership between a global company and a local player testifies to the potential of our region to grasp opportunities. This is, in fact, one of the primary goals of the ‘Digital Wallonia’ strategy.”

“This major investment reinforces the proactive Cloud strategy of NRB,” explains Pascal Laffineur, CEO of NRB. “We offer tailor-made Cloud solutions to our clients. We select for them the best ICT environment possible, whether an NRB private Cloud, public Cloud or hybrid Cloud approach. We connect and integrate the system and we ensure its efficient management. Moreover, with this project, we take a step further towards smarter IT infrastructure, thanks to automation and a smart software-defined data center.”

As innovation is a core value of both companies, the data center will be equipped with all the latest technologies developed by Etix Everywhere’s R&D Lab, particularly in addressing security matters.

With its current data centers located in Herstal, Belgium, approximately 30 kilometers from the BelgiumDC, and dark fiber linking the two sites, NRB will be better positioned to offer a first-rate business continuity plan. For its part, Etix Everywhere will market data housing to clients seeking to accommodate their servers in the best performance and security conditions of the market. The data center will be carrier-neutral, providing clients the freedom to work with the service providers of their choice. As innovation is a core value of both companies, the data center will be equipped with all the latest technologies developed by Etix Everywhere’s R&D Lab, particularly in addressing security matters.

“We were looking for a partner that shares our vision of innovation,” comments Thierry Engels, Infrastructure Manager of NRB. “With Etix Everywhere, we are assured to have a data center that is always at the cutting edge of technologies, which meets our clients’ demanding requirements.”

A Grid of Data Centers

This data center reflects the common international growth strategy of both companies. The goal of Etix Everywhere is to develop an international network of homogeneous and interconnected data centers in order to offer colocation services of the same quality all over the world. BelgiumDC clients will be able to benefit from IT capacity throughout the Etix Everywhere network with a preferential tariff.

“In parallel with the BelgiumDC construction, we are also building a data center in Lille, France,” states Louis Blanchot, Business Director of Etix Everywhere France. “This territorial coverage will create development opportunities for companies on both sides of the border.”

The two main players in professional real-estate valuation in Luxembourg, Houser and BetaTracker S.A., today announced their merger. Along with a capital investment into Houser, BetaTracker S.A. brings a ground-breaking public/private research project with LISER (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research), whose researchers are developing an exclusive method to accurately value residential property in Luxembourg.
(Featured Image: Daniel Haag, co-founder of BetaTracker and Matti Heikkila, CEO of Houser)

BetaTracker S.A. was conceived to provide professional real-estate services to banks and financial institutions, while Houser has already created several big-data real-estate services, Houser.lu for property buyers and renters, and HouserLOOP.com for real-estate agents.

Combining the scientific rigour of LISER’s research with Houser’s real-time market data and operational expertise ensures we can address the needs of banks to manage their portfolio risk and fulfill their regulatory requirements.

“This is a perfect match,” said Matti Heikkila, CEO of Houser, “The combination of BetaTracker’s banking expertise with Houser’s proven operations team ensures we can deliver the best real-estate services to our customers. Daniel Haag from BetaTracker was equally enthusiastic “Our unique partnership with LISER allows us to develop the most accurate valuation model in Luxembourg based on the real price of properties. Combining the scientific rigour of LISER’s research with Houser’s real-time market data and operational expertise ensures we can address the needs of banks to manage their portfolio risk and fulfill their regulatory requirements.”

LISER is already participating in the Observatoire de l’Habitat, department of the Ministry of Housing which is the leading source of official real-estate statistics in Luxembourg, releasing regular market information to the public through the website http://observatoire.liser.lu. As the first public/private partnership within LISER, the project has already shown how researchers at the institute are able to apply their expertise and address real business needs. Julien Licheron, the project coordinator in LISER was excited at the prospect of working with Houser “It is a very innovative project for us, creating a very close link between applied research and the business world. The operational expertise and experience of Houser is extremely complementary to our research skills in the construction of the valuation model”.

Dieter Horn is the CEO of CBN Technologies and one of the three co-founders of InnoHub Luxembourg. He shared with us some insights about the company he currently leads and how InnoHub has helped him to accelerate his business.
(Featured Image: Hannes Rogler, Founder and Managing Director of Rogler International)
Who are you? What does your company do?

I am the CEO of CBN Technologies. We are a young Luxembourg software developing company, founded by Hannes Rogler and Beatrix Blab, that works in the field of Industry 4.0. Since 1992 we have been working on Management Information Systems (MIS) under our Austrian company Rogler International, and in 2016 we decided to move all our operations to Luxembourg in order to internationalize our business activities, creating CBN Technologies.

Today, we are a recognized market player in the field of process digitalization and automatization as we have already realized about 100 installations in nine European countries. We offer many flexible and tailor-made solutions for our clients that want to automate processes. A good example is the flexible cost calculation based on performance catalogues, control of intra-logistics, electronic scheduling or monitoring solutions.

Initially your company started in Austria, why did you decide to come to Luxembourg?

Luxembourg is a great place to internationalize and we were surprised by Luxembourg’s RDI framework, which supports our intentions to develop game changing innovation.

As you have already collaborated with the soft landing platform and accelerator InnoHub Luxembourg, could you share your experience?

InnoHub is like the German Autobahn and allowed us to accelerate our activities and planned undertakings. We were able to rapidly access a vast network of competent partners and clients, which was crucial for our development. InnoHub is also a great resource for strategic development assistance, advice on innovating, and figuring out how to access markets effectively.

What is your advice for other entrepreneurs who intend to accelerate their business?

Luxembourg start-up, vyzVoice, has been named overall winner of the ICT category of the StartUp Europe Awards. vyzVoice CEO, Robert Spicer accepted the award at the ceremony presided by the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Antonio Tajani.
What is vyzVoice?

vyzVoice provide solutions for middle market companies that remove barriers to digital transformation.. Our origins were in commercial building data but it quickly became clear that advances in IoT and big data were creating tremendous opportunities for companies in many sectors. However, while large companies were investing heavily in digital transformation in both infrastructure and services, middle market companies faced a number of obstacles in moving forwards – investment decisions, rapidly changing technology and limited in-house technical expertise. As a result, many of these companies have been limited in their digital transformation and use of data solutions to remain competitive.

This is where vyzVoice comes in. By providing off-the-shelf, customizable solutions, we remove many of these difficulties and make effective digital transformation accessible.

With each of our customers we work on defining their business processes and identifying KPIs for data analysis for all users in the organisation. Starting with a Proof of Concept, in many cases our solutions can be fully deployed in a matter of weeks. Our platform is device agnostic and integrates with existing devices so customers are not faced with difficult investment decisions or concerns about future changes in technology.

We like to see our role as taking care of the technology so that our customers can focus on their business decisions.

Why did you apply to SEUA16?

SEUA considers a number of criteria for their awards. We recognised that these elements also corresponded to some key tenets at vyzVoice – not just as an innovative start up but also in the way our solutions make a significant, practical contribution to sustainability efforts.

We are also actively engaged in European projects such as HEART (Holistic Energy and Architectural Retrofit Toolkit) – a collaborative project, supported by the European Commission that is focused on sustainability and resource management in building renovation.

Last, but certainly not least, it is an honour to be able to represent Luxembourg. Luxembourg has provided a very supportive environment for vyzVoice as a start-up and innovator. SEUA also aims to build an eco-system for start-ups across Europe and Luxembourg is an great role model for others.

You won the SEUA16 in the ICT Category, what does it mean to you?

We are really delighted to receive this recognition of the value of our innovations and solutions on a European level. As with all the SEUA winners, the award opens up opportunities for further European collaboration and development. We are also really pleased that with both vyzVoice and Apateq receiving awards, Luxembourg is clearly on the map of the European start-up ecosystem.

And, for the vyzVoice team, it is great to see our hard work rewarded and it is certainly cause for celebration.

What are the next steps of your development?

We continue to work on development of our platform and solutions, ensuring that new advances are rapidly integrated, security levels are always at the highest standard and that our solutions bring real results to our customers.

We are developing a number of partnerships that will expand our services to new sectors and users. As with all start-ups we are always looking for new opportunities for innovation and growth.

Etix Everywhere, a global data center provider and operator, and Swedish agency ArcticSites announce the start of the pre-ordering phase of a future, Tier III+ design colocation data center, ‘Etix Jokkmokk #1,’ at hydro power hub Porjus in Jokkmokk, Sweden.

“This is a top-notch quality data center design that together with the redundant 100 percent renewable power supply and multiple fiber redundancy in Porjus makes this one of Sweden’s most powerful colocation data centers,” says Jörgen Venot, Senior Vice President for Northern Countries of Etix Everywhere.

“As a rule of thumb, an indirect free cooling design sharply reduces power consumption, and together with the local connectivity, will grant companies and organizations with a highly competitive infrastructure to support their digital transformation in Sweden,” says Jonas Sukloed, Director of ArcticSites. “On top of this, the expected uptime increases significantly compared to an ordinary server room.”

Pre-booking of rack-space has opened up and the construction starts as soon as a minimum level of pre- ordered capacity is reached.

“We can start the operation at a pre-ordering volume around a few hundred kVA, which indicates the advantageous conditions found in the Jokkmokk area,” adds Mr. Venot.

The data center will be marketed to local and international customers thanks to its highly developed connectivity. Given the technical design developed by Etix, the company only needs 16 weeks to deploy the data center, once the pre-ordering volume is reached.

The Mayor of Jokkmokk, Robert Bernhardsson, welcomes the announced establishment, especially considering the number of work opportunities it may create in the form of managed and added value services.

“It means boosting business for regional IT companies and a renewed dynamism for the local ICT ecosystem, empowering all types of companies in their digital transformation,” states Mayor Bernhardsson.

The customers of Etix Jokkmokk #1 will benefit from 24/7/365 monitoring by the Luxembourg Network Operations Center (NOC) and the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) and perimeter-security technology developed by Etix Labs, the R&D team of Etix Everywhere.

This new data center diversifies the Swedish colocation market and offers to both local and international companies a cutting-edge infrastructure that meets the highest standards on the market to support their development strategy.

They geographically demonstrate the international dimension of the Awards and the indisputable appeal of Luxembourg as a FinTech hub.
