As for the previous editions, each start-up will be granted 3 minutes and 33 seconds to present its project, followed by 2 minutes of Q&A in front of a jury composed of experts from the Luxembourg startup and entrepreneurial ecosystem. We can’t wait to see what happens this year”, explains Marton Fulop, Chief Operating Officer of Docler Holding. And adds, “We are also planning to open verticals to other companies and allow them to own their own pitching session and vertical in different fields: Fintech, Cybersecurtity, Insutech and Regtech, space, tourism, e-commerce, Media and Entertainment, just to mention a few”.

If more verticals are added, the initial prize pool of 50.000€ will increase.

Who will follow in the footsteps of Aiva, SESAMm and Wondermags, respective winners of the 2017, 2016 and 2015 editions?

CarStudio Speeds Things Up At The Pump With CarPay-Diem

Three times a month. That’s the average frequency which a driver in Europe fills up his vehicle.

A grind for many, synonymous with a waste of time for drivers and a waste of money for fleet managers. With all motorists in mind, CarStudio today tackles this chore of everyday life. To save them from wasting precious time at the service station, its team have identified CarPay-Diem, an embedded payment solution developed by a Luxembourg company.

In May of last year, the startup created in 2016, launched a second financing round with its existing shareholders together with new investors in a bid to accelerate CarPay-Diem’s deployment in market.

CarPay-Diem transforms customer experience at the service station

CarPay-Diem can be used at over 85,000 service stations, allowing the user to activate any fuel pump and manage payment without having to take out a payment card.

CarPay-Diem can be directly added to an existing mobile application, and when the user’s vehicle is located via GPS at a service station, their smartphone or car display automatically switches on the app in which CarPay-Diem is integrated. The driver only has to indicate the number of the pump next to which he has stopped to refuel.

Once the nozzle has been put back, payment is made automatically via the application, and the customer immediately receives a receipt.

“The system is simple and requires no infrastructure. It’s a building block that’s set to become part of the connected ecosystem of Mobivia brands.”

While Mobivia’s core business brands (Norauto, Midas and Carter-Cash) only see their customers on average once every ten months for vehicle maintenance, introducing this new, additional service represents an excellent opportunity for staying in contact.

“The system is simple and requires no infrastructure. It’s a building block that’s set to become part of the connected ecosystem of Mobivia brands. CarPay-Diem is currently deployed in Europe and has set its sights on rapidly becoming a global player. We will be there to help it grow”, enthuses Marie-Cécile Rochet, CEO of CarStudio.

We are very pleased to welcome CarStudio as an investment partner”, declares Frédéric Stiernon, CEO and founder of CarPay-Diem. “Outside the financial considerations, we’ll be able to benefit from the experience of CarStudio and the Mobivia brands, Norauto, Midas, Auto5 and Carter-Cash, in the field of mobility and new ways of using the car. Making the CarPay-Diem service available to the group’s customers is a very exciting perspective”, he concludes.

bitFlyer becomes the world’s first Bitcoin exchange to be regulated in Japan, the US and Europe

bitFlyer, the Tokyo-based operator of the world’s largest[1] Bitcoin exchange, today announced its launch into Europe. Having been granted a Payment Institution (PI) license to operate in the European Union it has become the first Bitcoin exchange to be regulated in Japan, the US and Europe, making it the most compliant virtual currency exchange in the world.
(Featured Image: Luxembourg Finance Minister, H.E. M. Pierre Gramegna and the Co-Founder and CEO of bitFlyer, Yuzo Kano)

bitFlyer’s launch into Europe comes hot on the heels of explosive growth in Japan and launch in the US in 2017. With 25 percent[2] of worldwide bitcoin exchange volumes being facilitated by bitFlyer and over $250bn in virtual currency traded on its platform in 2017, bitFlyer is the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange and the only one licensed in Europe that will allow users to trade with Japan, the world’s largest market for bitcoin trading.

The company is initially targeting professional, high-volume traders, an audience currently underserved in Europe. “What we bring to Europe is a platform designed by traders for traders,” says Andy Bryant, Chief Operating Officer of bitFlyer Europe. “Through our web interface or API, traders can get up and running quickly and benefit from some of the most robust systems, highest speeds and an interface designed with their specific needs in mind.”

Based on the latest volumes[3], roughly €10bn is traded worldwide in bitcoin per month, making the Euro the third largest bitcoin market in the world, after JPY and USD. “We’re pleased to see bitFlyer landing in Europe,” says Cedric Jeanson, CEO of BitSpread, one of the world’s largest digital currency market makers. “As virtual currency trading becomes mainstream and institutional investors get involved, there is a gap in Europe for a platform which specifically caters to the professional market.”

Speaking about the importance of today’s announcement, founder and CEO of bitFlyer and ex-Goldman Sachs trader, Yuzo Kano, said, “When I set up bitFlyer in 2014, I did so with global ambitions and the belief that approved regulatory status is fundamental to the long-term future of Bitcoin and the virtual currency industry. I am proud that we are now the most compliant virtual currency exchange in the world; this coveted regulatory status gives our customers, our company and the virtual currency industry as a whole a very positive future outlook.”

bitFlyer was granted its Payment Institution license by the Luxembourg Ministry of Finance and the Luxembourg regulator, Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) and from the company’s base at The Luxembourg House of Financial Technology Foundation (The LHoFT), it will market its platform in the European Union. “We’re delighted that one of the most successful Japanese startups chose Luxembourg as their EU platform,” –
Pierre Gramegna, the Luxembourg Minister of Finance.

bitFlyer’s initial product offering is the BTC/EUR pair. The company plans to add support for other virtual currencies such as Litecoin, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic and Bitcoin Cash later in the year.

bitFlyer Europe is offering zero percent trading fees as an introductory promotion until the end of February 2018.

Payconiq continues its European expansion in the Netherlands and Germany

$

The mobile payment service, known in Luxembourg as Digicash, sets course to transform European payment standard.

Payconiq, the mobile payment service which recently joined forces with Luxembourg-based Digicash, is now also available in Germany and the Netherlands. The service enables online, on-the- go and peer-to- peer payments with a smartphone. After a solid start in Belgium and Luxembourg, with over 45,000 stores enabling mobile payments via the Payconiq application, the next phase of Payconiq’s European expansion is now underway. Payconiq has hereby established itself as one of the most advanced mobile payment platforms in Europe and is striving for further international expansion in 2018.

“In Luxembourg, the number of active Digicash users has increased by 600% in the last 18 months.”

As of today, Payconiq is also available in both the Netherlands and Germany. In both countries, the first entrepreneurs and (online) retailers are now able to accept mobile Payconiq payments, both in-store and online. In cooperation with the local market leader in payment terminals, CCV, retailers in the Netherlands are assisted with the integration of Payconiq services into their existing payment systems. In Germany, Payconiq is launched in Munich with the aim of gradually building a network of consumers and retailers.

In Luxembourg, the number of active Digicash users has increased by 600% in the last 18 months. In addition to large merchants such as Total and Post Telecom, official authorities–notably the police and the Customs and Excise Administration–as well as a number of hospitals (e.g. the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg) also accept payments that are made by scanning a QR code with a mobile phone. In August 2017, Payconiq joined forces with Digicash to enable Digicash users to benefit from the full range of Payconiq services. Shortly after the merger, Payconiq moved its international headquarters to Luxembourg.

“Payconiq is convinced that one central app for managing all forms of mobile payments will be the future standard.”

Payconiq differentiates itself from other mobile payment services by directly linking consumers’ bank accounts to the mobile payments app. A simple QR code is all that is needed to make payments in (online) stores. Payment confirmation is instantaneous and Payconiq rates for entrepreneurs are kept at an affordable and low price level. The application is available for all mobile devices and can be easily downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

The mobile payment service aims to further expand the number of payment points across the Netherlands and Germany and intends to cross other European borders in 2018. Payconiq CEO Duke Prins says: ‘We are pleased to see Payconiq expand across Europe. Payconiq is convinced that one central app for managing all forms of mobile payments will be the future standard. Our success in Luxembourg and Belgium proves that European retailers and consumers share our vision.’

Luxembourg to Accelerate Digitization with Cisco

The Luxembourg government and Cisco have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Davos, Switzerland, to speed up digitization in the Grand Duchy. In line with the ‘Digital Luxembourg’ initiative, which is the cornerstone of the country’s digital policy roadmap, the government and Cisco intend to concentrate on four pillars: education, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things and fintech.
(Featured Image: Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel and Chuck Robbins, CEO and Chairman of Cisco signed a MoU in Davos / Image Credit © Ministry of Economy)

“Luxembourg has the ambition to be a digital leader in Europe”, says Prime minister Xavier Bettel. “Therefore we need to be at the forefront of technological development in order to embrace the acceleration in digitization. Luxembourg aims at attracting additional major investments allowing the digital conversion of our industry. We are happy to partner up with Cisco in order to further develop the digital innovation and the competitiveness of our country, which goes hand in hand with the creation of new jobs and will at the same time provide job security to existing ones. By modernising our education, we are going to encourage citizens to actively participate in the digital economy.”

Chuck Robbins, CEO and Chairman of Cisco commented: “Luxembourg has been a great innovator in Europe for many years, and now is the time to accelerate innovation to achieve the vision of a true Digital Luxembourg,” said Chuck Robbins, Chairman and CEO of Cisco. “Cisco is honored to partner with Prime Minister Bettel to help Luxembourg build a sustainable innovation ecosystem by investing in knowledge development, new revenue models and jobs of the future that will contribute to the global digital economy. I applaud his vision and look forward to a lasting partnership.”

“Prime Minister Bettel has a very clear view of the digital challenges of his country, and how to overcome the same, which is crucial for the growth of the national economy, the creation of jobs and the well-being of citizens.”
Four pillars for digital acceleration

The 3 year program that the Ministry of State and Cisco have outlined includes four focus areas:

1. Education: The University of Luxembourg and Cisco will contibute to the modernization of the education system with new technologies and curricula. As in other countries, there is an acute shortage of IT skills in the local labor market. As Luxembourg companies switch to digital business, this shortage will increase further. That is why Cisco will open a Networking Academy at the University of Luxembourg to provide free education to citizens. The Netacad curriculum provides a strong foundation with transferable skills.

2. Cyber security: cyber security is the cornerstone of digitization and essential for the protection of the Luxembourg economy and data of its citizens. The security of the national infrastructure, critical applications and online services are important issues for the government. As the global leader in cybersecurity, Cisco will assist Luxembourg with advice, expertise and solutions.

3. Internet of Things: IoT is one of the spearheads for the digitization of society and industry. It offers numerous opportunities for companies and governments as another 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet in the next decade. The Luxembourg government wants to use that potential and invest heavily in technological innovation to make the country smarter. Together with Cisco, it will work to connect what is not yet connected and develop an IoT ecosystem in order to grow the digital economy and create new jobs.

4. Fintech: the financial sector is one of Luxembourg’s most important assets and is a major contributor of local GDP. The government is therefore encouraging its financial institutions to embrace new technologies more quickly. One of the objectives in the Digital Luxembourg program provides for the development of fintech initiatives, by both current and new players in this field. Cisco will provide highly secure systems that enable financial service providers to reduce the risk of cyber attacks and improve customer experience.

“This is a starting point for a long term partnership to help accelerate Digital Luxembourg, and we expect the first tangible projects to turn that into reality soon.”

Arnaud Spirlet, Managing Director Cisco Belgium and Luxembourg said: “Prime Minister Bettel has a very clear view of the digital challenges of his country, and how to overcome the same, which is crucial for the growth of the national economy, the creation of jobs and the well-being of citizens. In order to realize the action points that we have defined, our Country Digital Acceleration teams will collaborate closely with the Luxembourg government, the business community and educational institutions in the coming years.”

Romain Siebenaler, country manager Cisco Luxembourg added: “This is a starting point for a long term partnership to help accelerate Digital Luxembourg, and we expect the first tangible projects to turn that into reality soon.”

“Connecting the Car eWallet technology to the CarPay-Diem platform will allow connected and in the future autonomous cars to pay for the fuel refills while providing the greatest driver experience.”

Thanks to this partnership, when a car equipped with the Car eWallet arrives in a fuel station, the driver selects his pump number on the display of the dashboard, he is then invited to refill the tank. When the nozzle is placed back on the pump the transaction is completed. CarPay-Diem managed the fuel station processes and confirmed the driver that he can leave the fuel station. A simple and straight forward user experience which conveniently saves time for drivers. All refill transactions remain available in the Car eWallet for later use or reporting purpose for example.

“Fueling is a high value-added for Car eWallet. In the near future drivers will be able to fuel their cars and pay from inside”

Frederic Stiernon, founder and CEO of CarPay-Diem says: “We are proud to join the Car eWallet project for the creation of the mobility services of the future. Connecting the Car eWallet technology to the CarPay-Diem platform will allow connected and in the future autonomous cars to pay for the fuel refills while providing the greatest driver experience.”

“CarPay-Diem provides an interface that allows Car eWallet to activate connected fuel pumps into the Car eWallet Service Ecosystem”, said Alexander Graf, Car eWallet Leader for ZF. “Fueling is a high value-added for Car eWallet. In the near future drivers will be able to fuel their cars and pay from inside”, he concluded.

The partners plan to launch live pilots in different regions over the next months.

Univize is the go-to platform for students who want to find the right university. What makes us special? We connect prospective university students with current university students, so that they can ask all their questions about the “inside information” (e.g. course load, cost of living, night life) that is nearly impossible to access through traditional online research.

As an early stage startup, we’ve been experiencing significant growth and are now looking for a CTO to join the founding team! We’re looking for somebody who can truly relate to the struggle of finding the right university and is committed to making Univize the global solution.

As the CTO of Univize, your responsibilities will include:

  • Continuous development of the Univize platform, including near-term product extensions and fixes as well as longer term re-engineering and feature implementation
  • Managing a team of front end and backend developers
  • Working closely with the founding team to translate the vision of Univize into the product
  • Freedom over IT architecture and product development methodologies

Ideally, we are searching for someone with full-stack skills and experience. However, expertise in front end/back end and solid understanding of the counterpart is also fine. You should be familiar with MEAN/MERN stack (mongo.db, express.js, angular.js (or react native for mobile app), node.js) as well as HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap library, Javascript, Javascript libraries (jQuery), noSQL, and Github.

As the CTO, not only will you receive a salary, but also co-founder’s equity. If you’re ready to lead Univize’s tech front and want to solve a real problem that millions of students face, please reach out to us at contact@univize.com!

For Space, OQ Technology will represent Luxembourg. OQ Technology satellites have orbits that allow them to scan the entire surface of the Earth offering customers wide visibility of their assets and the possibility to communicate with their sensors and actuators with near-real time communication. VR Creative is the Tourism category choice. Their mission is to bring meaningful and deep VR storytelling to life using GoPro arrays.

In the Water category, the winner is WETEQ. This is a vibrant Luxembourg-based CleanTech company with a proprietary portfolio of innovative chemistry-based solutions for wastewater treatment.
