Miigen, the digital time capsule!

What if your late grandparents could still speak to you today and remind you of their life and memories? That’s the aim of Miigen, a Scottish startup that has created a digital time capsule. Silicon Luxembourg met with Miigen’s CEO during Arch Summit.
(Featured Image: Craig Lemmon, CEO of Miigen / Image Credit © Olivier Minaire)

You can think of Miigen as a biograph if you wish, keeping family memories safe in your digital scrapbook for you and your family to enjoy” said Craig Lemmon, the CEO. This works quite simply: photos can be uploaded and commented in your own words thanks to a voice tag added to the photos. They are then saved on a private cloud. People can decide to share them publicly on their Facebook profile for instance even though they can also remain strictly for a private use between family members.

We want to create an emotional link on the pictures through the voice tag, such emotion being kept even years after they have been taken.

Miigen also offers the possibility to elderly people to create their time capsule in the present and share it only once they’re gone, so their life and story can be remembered forever by family and friends. “We want to create an emotional link on the pictures through the voice tag, such emotion being kept even years after they have been taken” explained the founder.

The startup exists since beginning of 2016. “Our technology has evolved since September of last year, as we now have eight languages offered. We are a team of 7 persons working on the development of the website” said the CEO.

Miigen has just raised 500,000$ and is currently in discussion with some prospects from the Silicon Valley to raise more funds to continue its development!

0100 Conference Luxembourg: Insights from European Mid and Large Cap Private Equity

$
0
0
Luxembourg will again be the centre stage of European Private Equity. 0100 Ventures, in collaboration with Luxembourg Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (LPEA), will host at Hotel Royal the international “0100 Conference Luxembourg”, a meeting place for investors and managers of private equity funds.

Many of Europe’s leading private equity firms such as CVC, TPG, Ardian or PAI will come to Luxembourg to share their views on the different aspects of fundraising, capturing “alpha”, value creation or investments in the technology media and telecommunications sector.

The conference will mix local and international participants in a concept that has already been applied in Vienna, Dublin and Bratislava. According to Martin Uhnak, Conference Director, “the decision to come to Luxembourg is due to the interest of investors for the country and to the growing ecosystem of this unique Private Equity hub.”

This initiative follows the “LPEA Insights” conference held earlier this year and which gathered over 300 participants around the topic of Private Equity. Once again this will be a good opportunity for Luxembourg to continue opening its Private Equity sector to players not yet established in the country.

Particularly in view of Brexit, the “0100 Conference Luxembourg”, will provide an additional opportunity to learn about the Private Equity activities carried out in Luxembourg and will be the occasion to meet the decision makers shaping the sector in Luxembourg and abroad.

LPEA’s Charm Offensive in Berlin

$
0
0
Luxembourg is a well known hub for private equity investment across Europe. What few fund managers and entrepreneurs actually know, is that it is also a particularly interesting location to establish VC funds. This year LPEA decided to tweak its traditional private equity roadshow and address venture capital managers directly in Europe’s trendy startup capital: Berlin! We asked Luis Galveias, LPEA’s Marketing & Communication Manager to get a feedback following that roadshow.

What is the aim of the roadshow?

The Luxembourg Private Equity & Venture Capital Association has been organising “roadshows” in cities such as London, Munich or New York for many years but always focused in the private equity business. This year we decided to organise our first venture capital-focused roadshow and Berlin was our city of choice due to its dynamic community of startups and significant number of headquartered VC funds.

With the increased flexibility of Luxembourg’s structuring options for smaller funds, such as through the implementation of the Reserved Alternative Investment Fund (RAIF) or the increased number of 3rd party management companies, Luxembourg became more attractive and accessible for venture capital funds. The breakfast in Berlin was valuable to share that message with fund managers as well as obtain feedback from the local speakers and participants on what else needs to be done to overcome the typical obstacles of these type of funds.

“We hope this helped making Berlin VCs to see that on top of setting up an optimal fund structure, they can actually become closer to an interesting pool of investment opportunities.”

How LPEA is helping startups concretely along the year?

LPEA brings together the private equity and venture capital firms operating in Luxembourg. In order to better support the entrepreneurs who contact us, we regularly monitor the market for VCs in Luxembourg and take note of the start-ups obtaining VC funding by sharing that information in our magazine “Private Equity Insight/ Out”. More recently at our annual LPEA Insights conference we gave the stage to Job Today, one of Luxembourg’s VC-backed success stories, to present its journey towards an audience of asset managers.

It is important also to highlight that in the event in Berlin we didn’t only speak about structuring VC funds in Luxembourg but also presented the country’s fast-growing startup community. We hope this helped making Berlin VCs to see that on top of setting up an optimal fund structure, they can actually become closer to an interesting pool of investment opportunities.

“We need to widen the spectrum of investors, notably to the earlier stages of funding, by creating better conditions for business angels to invest.”

How is the VC framework suited to startups in Luxembourg?

There isn’t a specific “VC framework” in Luxembourg but rather an overall investment framework which suits well the needs of VC fund managers. As for the startups, we believe the creation of the Luxembourg Future Fund in 2015 – which feeds funds with a commitment to invest in either local or international startups setting foot in Luxembourg; and the creation of the public-private Digital Tech Fund in 2016 (with four investments to date) were two important steps to start focusing in in local start-ups’ needs.

The country needs more investors and we are pleased to see new players such as 2be attracted by fintech and the corporate venture Encevo with an eye on energy appliances, both holding regular contacts with local startups. But we need to widen the spectrum of investors, notably to the earlier stages of funding, by creating better conditions for business angels to invest. Luxembourg is unfortunately one of the few European countries without a tax break for early stage investors or any sort of investment scheme tailored to support startups. That could clearly make a difference as it was the case in many other countries.

LUXHUB, a European Open Banking API Platform hosted in Luxembourg, just announced a key initiative to broaden its catalogue of services in the context of the new European API Economy.

LUXHUB and PRETA have signed an agreement allowing LUXHUB to access PRETA’s Open Banking Europe Directory, the Pan European directory providing a single, standardized, trusted, machine readable source for all TPPs and to manage a local copy of PRETA’s directory in Luxembourg to insure a reliable, fast and performant TPP orchestration in the PSD2 context.

The partnership with PRETA strengthens LUXHUB’s vision to mutualize operational and technical efforts in the context of PSD2 compliance so banks can focus on the development of their core business and on the relationship with their customers. All European Banks offering payment accounts has to comply by 14th September 2019 with the specifications defined in the Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS).

“We’re developing our range of solutions at high velocity to guarantee full compliance and insure high-level flexibility and unmatched agility for our customers.”

LUXHUB is the result of a partnership between four leading Luxembourg banks, determined to leverage the challenges and opportunities of PSD2 It’s in this specific context that Banque et Caisse d’Epargne de l’Etat Luxembourg, BGL BNP Paribas, Banque Raiffeisen and Post Luxembourg decided end 2017 to join their forces to create LUXHUB, a PSD2 API connectivity platform. Basically, LUXHUB’s objective is to make interconnection of the entire ecosystem of banks and TPPs as easy as possible.

“We’re developing our range of solutions at high velocity to guarantee full compliance and insure high-level flexibility and unmatched agility for our customers. In the future, successful innovative business will only be possible by cooperating with other institutions, part or not of the financial services sector. LUXHUB sees its mission as helping European financial institutions with these exciting new challenges”, commented Jacques PÜTZ, CEO of LUXHUB.

“There are at least 4,000 banks in Europe that need to comply with PSD2 access to account requirements and not all of them are large enough to provide and connect to necessary infrastructure themselves”

Open Banking Europe (OBE) is a PRETA initiative launched in June 2017 with the aim of fostering innovation, competition and efficiency to increase consumer choice and enhance security for online payments in the EU. To do that Open Banking Europe brings market players together to turn regulatory requirements into operational reality and is working on providing the industry with PSD2 directory services. The full list of Account-Servicing Payment Service Providers (AS-PSPs) and Third Party Providers (TPPs) that have joined the initiative so far can be found here.

“We are very pleased to see LUXHUB joining the initiative. There are at least 4,000 banks in Europe that need to comply with PSD2 access to account requirements and not all of them are large enough to provide and connect to necessary infrastructure themselves, so it’s great to see LUXHUB joining as another service provider to provide PSD2 access services”, stated John Broxis, Managing Director of PRETA.

PRETA was created in 2013 to develop and innovate services for digital payment and identity solutions. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EBA CLEARING, a provider of pan-European payment solutions currently owned by 51 shareholder banks. PRETA’s objective is to ensure the protection of digital identities and to provide secure and simple solutions in the online and mobile space. PRETA’s pan-European mindset encourages the collaboration of all players in the co-operative space with a view to supporting the European digital economy and Digital Single Market. PRETA owns and runs MyBank, an e-authorisation solution enabling the exchange of financial and non-financial information among and between payment service providers and other market players. MyBank Payments enables customers to pay online or via mobile channels, directly from their bank account.
